Located in Northern Bulgaria and along Yantra River, Veliko Tarnovo is the capital of Veliko Tarnovo Province, and is often cited as the City of Tsars. This city is most famous for being the capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire. The town is currently home to around seventy thousand people, and a good number are students studying at one of the largest universities in the country.
Veliko Tarnovo holds an important place in Bulgarian history and is in fact one of the oldest towns in the country, being traced back more than five thousand years. The main rise of this ancient town is traced back to 1185, when the town was made a capital of the country by Peter and Asen who ended the Byzantine Empire. This turnaround to the capital of the country made Veliko Tarnovo an important cultural and intellectual location, which it held till 1393; after its fall.

Getting InThere are many ways in which a person can be able to get into Veliko Tarnovo. The local airport in the city is not open to passenger air traffic, but private landings can be arranged. However, to get in by air, one will have to fly to Sofia, or Varna, then travel by train or coach to this ancient city.
Trains from various parts of Bulgaria can get you to the small train station in Veliko Tarnovo, or one may alight at the larger train station in Gorna Oryahovitsa. From here, a person may decide to take a cab, or a bus, leaving every twenty minutes to the city center. Taxis too can get you to the city center, at slightly higher rates. Buses from the capital leave for Veliko Tarnovo every hour, and if you are looking to check out the sights by road, then they are the transport means to use.
A main road passes through Veliko Tarnovo, and if you using a private car, getting here will be no problem at all, with good parking spaces available.
Moving AroundIf you want to check out the sights in Veliko Tarnovo, there are many ways in which you can be able to move around. Walking is by far the best way to get around, since it is cheap, and you can get to main attractions like Tsarevets easily.
Taxis are also great ways to get around the city, and you can simply waive one down, and they will stop, or you can call one up, to pick you.
Veliko Tarnovo is not so large, and public transport is mainly by bus, or mini bus. Most lines pass through the city center, and as such getting lost is virtually impossible. Cars can also be used to get around the city, and can be rented out if you are looking to travel in privacy.
