Veliko Tarnovo History
Veliko Tarnovo is particularly one of the most ancient small towns that dates back several millenniums since the first ever evidence of existence of human life. This changed following the start of the 12th to the 15th centuries where population grew rapidly and there arise from so many settlements, improving it, to become one of Bulgaria's biggest provinces. The city continued to conquer other small ones whenever their leadership seemed to weaken making it one of the greatest during its time.
Byzantine Empire was one of these kingdoms that were taken over by the mighty Veliko thanks to its great cultural influence at the time. The fame took it to be the second strongest Bulgarian empire that attracted foreign traders who came with their merchandise and promoted religion as well. Headquarters of Catholic and Jewish groups were based here due to the high population present that was targeted for the religious reasons.
After all that growth in population as well as religion, a three-month siege that took place in starting the 17th of July 1393 destabilized the entire Bulgarian empire. The Ottoman Empire was behind this attack and destroyed all the churches, towns and villages by burning them down. Later on in the Ottoman rule, there were two uprisings against the Ottoman regime with the purpose of liberating Bulgaria failed in 1598 and 1686 respectively.
Later on in 1875 and 1876 there was a stronger uprising among the people of Veliko that saw the Ottoman regime defeated and brought in the new rule of the people by the people then followed the Turkish war in 1877-1878. The Russian general liberated Veliko Tarnovo from the rule of Ottoman that had taken a whole 480 Years. The liberated state of Bulgaria placed Veliko Tarnovo as its capital that later on in the year 1879 drafted its own constitution on 17th of April. The city got its official name in the year 1965 in the celebration of its history after it had declared its independence on the 5th of October 1908.
This is the modern-day home of tourism for the country of Bulgaria in addition to being a major historical city. This city has preserved the Bulgarian history for all the regimes that ruled since the very ancient times. With an approximate population of 70,000 people, the city has grown mainly in tourism as well as other economic sectors that have boosted the growth of the Bulgarian nation.
Today, Veliko Tarnovo is a famed tourist destination, with various points of interest, including museums that depict the whole history of Bulgaria for the last 5000 years. Being the old capital of Bulgaria is much more than any form of fame accorded to this city. The city has grown to accommodate passenger traffic in the air lines thanks to the Turnovo's Goma Oryahovista airport only 4 Kms from the city itself. With a small train station, the most preferred means of transport is taxis that are cheap as well as easily accessible to most parts of the city.
